From Paul's Musical Resume:

In the beginning of 1980, Michael Donoghue, a fellow grad student at the Harvard University Herbaria, found out I was a bass player and started telling me about a group he was playing banjo with. Later that spring he took me over to Taylor's apartment on Pleasant Street where I met the Chicken Chokers, Chad Chip & Jim, literally lying around the house splitting a bottle of Beam. At that time I really had no preconceived notion of old time style, so I basically concentrated on listening to the entire ensemble and playing simple bass lines which are rhythmically balanced by Jim's whacking off-beat. The Chokers had a sort of musical chemistry which manifest itself instantly, we would consistently break into an incredible rhythmic groove which made the music feel like rock & roll with melodic lines floating lightly on top. I was hooked.
